The IBM Magstar 3590 Tape Subsystem

The IBM Magstar 3590 Tape Subsystem provides high levels of capacity, performance, and reliability for S/390, RS/6000, AS/400, and a variety non-IBM UNIX and Windows NT systems. The 3590 subsystem includes tape drives and controllers that can be configured in a broad range of solutions that includes stand-alone frames or racks, or in automated library solutions to meet a diverse set of customer requirements. The Magstar 3590 Tape Drives can be attached to a SCSI host interface of selected IBM and non-IBM midrange and open systems. The tape drives can also attach to ESCON channels on S/390 systems through a Magstar 3590 controller.

Model Abstract 3590-A00

The 3590-A00 is a controller designed for attaching 3590 B Model tape drives(3590-B11 and 3590-B1A) to ESCON channels on ES/3090, ES/9000, or S/390 systems. It can be installed in a Magstar 3494 Tape Library, 3590-A14 Frame, 3590-C14 Silo Compatible Frame, or standard 19" rack (such as the IBM 9309 Rack Enclosure Model 002). It can also be attached as a free-standing unit to a 3590-C12 Silo Compatible Frame.

Model Abstract 3590-A14

The 3590-A14 is a frame box that can be attached to a Magstar 3495 Tape Library or used for non-library attachment of 3590 drives to ES/9000, ES/3090, or S/390 systems. Four 3590-B1A drives along with one 3590-A50 or 3590-A00 controller can be installed in the 3590-A14 for attachment to aMagstar 3495 Tape Library; or up to four 3590-B11 drives and one 3590-A60 Controller (or up to two 3590-A50 or 3590-A00 Controllers), or up to four 3590-E11 drives and one 3590-A60 Controller (or up to two 3590-A50 Controllers), can be installed in the 3590-A14 for non-library usage on an ES/9000, ES/3090, or S/390 system.

Model Abstract 3590-A50

The 3590-A50 is a controller designed for attaching 3590 drives to ESCON channels on ES/3090, ES/9000, or S/390 systems. It can be installed in a Magstar 3494 Tape Library, 3590-A14 Frame, 3590-C14 Silo Compatible Frame, or standard 19" rack (such as the IBM 9309 Rack Enclosure Model 002). It can also be attached as a free-standing unit to a 3590-C12 Silo Compatible Frame. Its performance is roughly double what was achieved in the predecessor 3590-A00 Controller.

Model Abstract 3590-A60

The 3590-A60 is a controller designed for attaching 3590 drives to ESCON channels on ES/3090, ES/9000, or S/390 systems. It can be installed in a Magstar 3494 Tape Library, 3590-A14 Frame, 3590-C10 Silo Compatible Frame, or standard 19" rack (such as the IBM 9309 Rack Enclosure Model 002, 7014 RS/6000 Rack Model S00, or the 7015 RS/6000 System Rack Model R00). Its offers significant performance improvements over the 3590-A50 Controller.

Model Abstract 3590-B11

The Magstar 3590-B11 tape drive is the rack-mountable model that includes a 10-cartridge Automatic Cartridge Facility (ACF) that can be used in a random access mode as a mini-library. Up to four 3590-B11s can be installed in a rack, thus reducing the floor space required. The ACF can be quickly loaded with a new magazine. This model includes an integrated SCSI-3 controller with two ports that support a 16-bit, fast-and-wide, Ultra SCSI differential interface. The 3590-B11 can also attach to the IBM 3591 High Performance Tape Control Unit Model A01 for ESCON channel attachment. It can also be mounted in a 3590-A14 Frame with the 3590-A60, 3590-A50, or 3590-A00 Controller for non-library attachment to ESCON channels. The 3590-B11 tape drive has a 9 MB/second native data rate (with compression up to 33 MB/second sustained data rate).

Model Abstract 3590-B1A

The Magstar 3590-B1A tape drive comes without the ACF and is designed to go into the IBM Magstar IBM 3494 Tape Library. It can also go in the 3590-C12 or 3590-C14 Silo Compatible Frame for attachment to a StorageTek Automated Cartridge System (ACS) or in the 3590-A14 Frame for attachment to a Magstar 3495 Tape Library. This model includes an integrated SCSI-3 controller with two ports that support a 16-bit, fast-and-wide, Ultra SCSI differential interface. The 3590-B1A tape drive has a 9 MB/second native data rate (with compression up to 33 MB/second sustained data rate).

The 3590-C10 Silo Compatible Frame box contains one or two Magstar 3590-A60 Controllers connected to Magstar 3590 Tape Drives in an associated 3590-C12 or 3590-C14 Silo Compatible Frame for attachment to a StorageTek** Automated Cartridge System (ACS).

Model Abstract 3590-C12

The 3590-C12 Silo Compatible Frame box can be attached to a StorageTek** Automated Cartridge System (ACS). One to four 3590-B1A or 3590-E1A Tape Drives can be installed in the 3590-C12 frame. The 3590 drives can be attached to the SCSI interface of a host system such as a RS/6000 or Sun system. An additional option is provided to enable connection of the 3590-B1A drives to ESCON channels on MVS/ESA ES/3090, ES/9000, or S/390 systems using either an external Magstar 3590-A60 Controller (in a 3590-A60 Silo Compatible Frame), an external stand-alone Magstar 3590-A50 or 3590-A00 Controller, or 3591 Model A01 High Performance Control Unit. One to four Magstar 3590-E1A Tape Drives can also be attached to one Magstar 3590-A60 Controller (in a 3590-C10 Silo Compatible Frame) or to one or two external 3590-A50 Controllers.

Model Abstract 3590-C14

The 3590-C14 Silo Compatible Frame box attaches one to four Magstar 3590-B1A tape drives in a StorageTek** Automated Cartridge System (ACS) to ESCON channels on ES/3090, ES/9000, and S/390 systems through one or two 3590-A50 or 3590-A00 Controllers packaged within the 3590-C14. One to four Magstar 3590-E1A Tape Drives can also be attached to one Magstar 3590-A60 Controller (in a 3590-C10 Silo Compatible Frame) or to one or two 3590-A50 Controllers in the 3590-C14.

IBM 3494 Magstar Tape Libraries​

The IBM Magstar 3494 Tape Library Family

The IBM Magstar 3494 Tape Library is an automated tape cartridge library designed to provide high availability to customer data in both S/390 and Open Systems environments. Its affordable, modular design allows the 3494 to grow as your business grows. Flexible configuration choices start at a single frame with up to two tape drives and up to 240 tape cartridges. Optional drive, storage, and Virtual Tape Server units may be added as needed, to create an automated tape library with up to 66 physical tape drives, 128 virtual tape drives, and up to 6,240 tape cartridges. Choices in tape drives for the 3494 can be either the IBM 3490E or the high-capacity, high-performance IBM Magstar 3590 tape drives, or a mix of both. The 3494 supports a variety of IBM and Open Systems hosts including S/390, RS/6000, AS/400, UNIX, Windows NT, SUN, and HP.

Also available are unique optional features such as the 3494 High Availability model and the IBM Magstar 3494 Virtual Tape Server (VTS). The 3494 High Availability model provides a second tape cartridge accessor and library manager for higher library availability and performance. The IBM 3494 VTS uniquely combines the speed of disk, the advantages of virtual tape drives, the capacity and reliability of IBM 3590 tape technology, and the automation of the 3494 to create an industry-leading self-contained hierarchical storage management subsystem. All this plus remote console support, SNMP management capabilities, multi-host attachment, and modular design make the 3494 flexible, easy to use, and the best choice in automated tape library solutions.

Model Abstract 3494-B16

The 3494-B16, an integrated Seascape (TM) solution, provides a hierarchical storage management system to attached ESCON* hosts by integrating IBM Magstar 3590 tape drives, fault tolerant RAID disk storage and a RISC based controller. It appears to host systems as two fully configured 3490E tape subsystems. The 3494-B16 contains 400 tape cartridge storage cells.

The 3494-B16 must be integrated with a 3494-L12 drive unit and attached to IBM Magstar Tape Library Models 3494-L10, 3494-L12 or 3494-L14.

Model Abstract 3494-B18

The IBM 3494-B18 Magstar Virtual Tape Server, a second generation Seascape solution, provides improved performance and capacity to lower the total cost of ownership for tape processing. IBM`s Magstar Virtual Tape Server, the industry`s first cartridge system tape based virtual tape system, is a revolutionary product exploiting the advanced performance, capacity, and data integrity of the Magstar 3590 Tape Drive, IBM`s industry leading tape technology. The Magstar 3494-B18 Virtual Tape Server, when attached to an associated 3494-D12 and its integrated Magstar 3590-B1A or 3590-E1A Tape Drives, provides an enhanced version of the Magstar Virtual Tape Server.

The Magstar 3494-B18 Virtual Tape Server is packaged as a stand alone unit that can be a maximum of 14 meters from the associated 3494 drive unit frame. The 3494-B18 contains a new RISC processor, host attachment of two standard ESCON channels, and up to 288 GB of tape volume cache. The ESCON High Performance Option (EHPO) provides two enhanced ESCON host channel attachments with data compression for improved performance and effective cache capacities of up to 864 GB (assuming 3:1 compression). Two additional enhanced ESCON host channel attachments can also be specified. A Magstar 3494 Tape Library can now be configured with up to two Virtual Tape Servers. Virtual configurations have also been enhanced to provide a maximum of 64 virtual devices and up to 150,000 logical volumes per 3494. Each virtual volume can now have a maximum capacity of 2.4 GB (assuming 3:1 compression).

Model Abstract 3494-D10

The 3494-D10 supports the IBM 3490E Magnetic Subsystem models 3490-C1A, 3490-C2A and 3490-F1A. The 3494-D10 can contain zero or one 3490E tape drive unit (3490-C1A or 3490-C2A) or up to two 3490-F1A Tape Drives and 400 or 300 tape cartridge storage cells.

The 3494-D10 must be attached to IBM Magstar Tape Library Models 3494-L10, 3494-L12 or 3494-L14.

Model Abstract 3494-D12

The 3494-D12 supports the IBM Magstar Tape Subsystem 3590-E1A or 3590-B1A and is designed to grow as your storage and tape drive needs grow. The base configuration of no tape drive unit and 400 tape cartridge storage cells can be expanded with up to a total o f six tape drive units and 250 tape storage cells.

The 3494-D12 must be attached to a IBM Magstar Tape Library Models 3494-L10, 3494-L12, or 3494-L14. The 3494-D12 with three, four, five or six Magstar 3590 tape drives, can be integrated with a 3494-B16 or 3494-B18 Virtual Tape Server to provide an ESCON attached hierarchical storage management system.

Model Abstract 3494-D14

The 3494-D14 can contain one 3590-A60, 3590-A50, or 3590-A00 Controller and up to four Magstar 3590-E1A or four 3590-B1A Tape Drives and is designed to grow as your storage and tape drive needs grow. The base configuration of no tape drive unit and 400 tape cartridge storage cells can be expanded with up to a total of four tape drive units and 305 tape storage cells.

The 3494-D14 must be attached to a IBM Magstar Tape Library Models 3494-L10, 3494-L12, or 3494-L14.

Model Abstract 3494-HA1

The 3494--HA1 includes a second library manager and accessor, two service bays and required hardware and is designed for concurrent maintenance.

The 3494-HA1 operates in standby mode to provide a redundant library manager and accessor or improved availability. With the Dual Active Accessor (DAA) feature active on the 3494-L10, 3494-L12 , or 3494-L14, both accessors can operate simultaneously to increase mount performance of the l ibrary. With two library managers and dual accessors, and each containing two disk drives for duplication of the library databases, maintenance can now be performed in most situations on the failing library control unit component while the 3494 is still available for customer production. The 3494-HA1 contains no storage cells for tape cartridges.

The 3494-L10 contains the automation, the Library Manager, either a 3490-C1A or 3490-C2A or up to two 3490-F1A Tape Drives, and storage cells for tape cartridges. It is designed to grow as your storage and usage needs grow. The cartridge capacity is determined by whether or not an optional Convenience I/O Station is installed. With the 30-cartridge Convenience I/O Station installed, the cartridge storage capacity is 160; with the 10-cartridge Convenience I/O Station installed, the cartridge storage capacity is 210; without either one, the capacity is 240. The storage capacity and number of drives can be increased by adding either 3494-S10 storage units, or 3494-D10, 3494-D12, and 3494-D14 drive units. A 3494-B16 Virtual Tape Server with an attached 3494-D12 drive unit can also be added for a total of 15 additional frames and up to 6240 tape cartridges. A 3494-B18 Virtual Tape Server can be externally attached to the 3494-L10. Up to sixteen tape control unit functions can be supported by the 3494-L10. The total quantity of supported tape drives is dependent on the combination of installed 3494-B16s and tape subsystems. The 3494-L10 can be upgraded to a 3494-L12 or 3494-L14. The 3494-L10 can be accessed by multiple systems such as the AS/400*, RS/6000*, RS/6000 SP*, ES/3090*, ES/9000*, S/390*, Hewlett** Packard (HP), Sun** processors, and Intel-based processors running Microsoft Windows NT**.

The IBM 3592 Enterprise Tape Products, (Drives, Controllers, and Frames) are follow-on products to the highly successful Enterprise Tape Controller 3590 Models. They are designed for environments that require a high-performance tape solutions.

Model Abstract 3592-C06

The IBM 3592 System Storage TS1120 Tape Controller Model C06 is designed to provide performance and reliability for IBM System z customers. It The TS1120 Tape Controller, has up to four 4-Gbps FICON attachments, compared with the IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Tape Controller 3592 Model J70 offers. The TS1120 Tape Controller also has up to eight ESCON attachments, or an intermix of ESCON and FICON attachments. The TS1120 Tape Controller offers four 4-Gbps Fibre Channel adapters for attaching 3592 Tape Drives. Up to 16 of the IBM 3592 Tape Drives can be attached to a single TS1120 Tape Controller. The controller can be installed in an IBM 3953 Tape Frame Model F05, an IBM 3952 Tape Frame Model F05, or in a stand-alone rack, supporting 3592 Tape Drives installed in IBM 3494 frames, IBM 3584 frames, IBM 3592 Model C20 frames, and stand-alone racks.

Model Abstract 3592-C20

The IBM TotalStorage 3592 Silo Compatible Tape Drive Frame Model C20 can be attached to a StorageTek Automated Cartridge System (ACS). It can contain one to 20 of the IBM System Storage TS1120 (3592 Model E05) or IBM TotalStorage 3592 Model J1A Tape Drives for attachment to a Fibre Channel interface on open system servers. The tape drives can also be attached through an external IBM TotalStorage 3592 Controller Model J70 or 3590 Controller Model A60 to ESCON or FICON channels on IBM mainframe servers. The Model C20 Frame also supports n+1 redundant power supplies for the drive and has redundant frame line cords for improved availability.

Model Abstract 3592-J70

The IBM 3592 TotalStorage Enterprise Tape Controller Model J70 is designed to provide higher of performance and attachment capabilities for IBM mainframe server customers. The 3592 Model J70 Controller has up to four 2-Gbps FICON attachments, twice the number that the IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Tape Controller 3590 Model A60 offers. The 3592 Model J70 also has up to eight ESCON attachments, or an intermix of ESCON and FICON attachments. Up to 16 of the IBM System Storage TS1120 Tape Drive (3592 Model E05) or IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Tape Drive 3592 Model J1A can be attached to a single 3592 Model J70 Controller. Or, the 3592 Model J70 can also be used to attach up to 12 of the IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Tape Drive 3590. The 3592 Model J70 can be installed in the same frames as the current 3590 Model A60 Controller. These include 3494 Frames, the 3590 Model C10, the 3590 Model A14, and stand-alone racks.

Model Abstract 3592-J1A

The IBM 3592 TotalStorage Enterprise Tape Drive Model J1A has a dual-ported 2-Gbps Fibre Channel interface Fibre Channel attachment to host systems or a switched fabric environment. It has a high-technology design that increases the native data rate to up to 40 MB/sec, over 2.5 times the 14 MB/sec data rate of the 3590 E or H Models, and over 4 times the 9 MB/sec data rate of the 3590 B Models. With data compression and a 32 K blocksize, the Model J1A is designed to offer up to 2.5 times the data rate of the 3590 E or H Model.

Model Abstract 3592-E05

The IBM 3592 System Storage TS1120 Tape Drive Model E05 (3592 Model E05) is supported for integration in the IBM System Storage Tape Libraries, Virtual Tape Servers (VTS), and tape controllers. The TS1120 Tape Drive is designed to provide higher levels of performance, reliability, and cartridge capacity than the IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Tape Drive 3592 Model J1A. The TS1120 E05 Tape Drive can help address the needs of tape customers across a broad range of computing environments. A 4Gb Fibre Channel Switch feature is also available with its integrated support in the IBM 3592 Tape Controller, the IBM 3953 Tape Frame Model F05 and the IBM TotalStorage 3494 Tape Library Model D22.​​

The 3592 IBM System Storage TS1130 Tape Drive, Models E06 and EU6 (machine type 3592) are the third generation of IBM`s highly successful 3592 Enterprise Tape Drives. The TS1130 Tape Drive is supported for integration in the IBM System Storage TS1120 Tape Controller Model C06, IBM Enterprise Tape Controller 3592 Model J70, IBM System Storage TS3400 Tape Library, IBM System Storage TS3500 Tape Library, IBM TotalStorage 3494 Tape Library, and IBM Silo Compatible Tape Drive Frame 3592 Model C20, or racks that enable stand-alone installations.

Note: The TS1130 3592 Model EU6 is only available as an upgrade to the TS1120 3592 Model E05 Tape Drive. Through this change, the E05 canister is upgraded to include the components necessary to achieve the media capacity and performance points of the EO6 tape drive through the Miscellaneous Equipment Specification (MES) process. Model upgrades beyond the Model EU6 will not be available. IBM`s plans are subject to change without notice, and IBM does not warrant that future upgrades will be offered for the Model E06.

In addition, IBM`s standard warranty terms will apply because Model EU6 is only available as an MES to Model E05. Model EU6 will assume only any remaining warranty entitlements or the service status of Model E05 that has been upgraded.

Model Abstract 3592-E06​

The IBM 3592 System Storage TS1130 Tape Drive Model E06 has 1000 GB data capacity (native) and attaches to the 3592 Model C20, 3494, 3584 libraries and is rack mountable.

Capacity

The TS1130 is designed to provide up to 1 TB uncompressed capacity, 42% more native capacity than the TS1120 Tape Drive and over three times the native cartridge capacity of a 3592 Model J1A. The IBM TotalStorage 3584 Tape Library Expansion Frame 3584 Model D22 may be added to the IBM TotalStorage 3584 Tape Library Base Frame Models L22, L32, or L52 in order to add storage or drive capacity. Up to 15 Model D22 Frames may be added to each base frame. Each 3584 Model D22 Frame has a 3592 cartridge capacity of up to 400 cartridge slots and support for up to twelve IBM System Storage TS1120 Tape Drives (3592 Model E05) or IBM TotalStorage 3592 Tape Drives Model J1A with an incremental reduction of storage slots for each set of four drives. This model has the same footprint as the Model L22, which is a smaller footprint than the Models L32 or D32. Data capacity for the Model D22 using 3592 data cartridges is 108 to 200 TB native and 324 to 600 TB using 3592 data compression at 3:1 compression.

The IBM 3584 TS3500 Tape Library Model D23 expansion frame is designed for TS1120 or 3592 Tape Drives and 3592 data cartridges. Up to 15 Model D23 expansion frames may be added to the TS3500 Model L22, L23, L32, L52, or L53 base frame to increase 3592 cartridge storage or drive capacity. Each 3584 Model D42 frame supports up to 360 DLTtape IV storage slots and up to twelve DLT 8000 drives, with incremental reduction of storage slots for each set of four of drives installed. A 3584 UltraScalable Tape Library with five D42 frames has a capacity of up to 1784 DLTtape slots and 229 LTO Ultrium slots, resulting in a maximum native data capacity of 22.9 TB on LTO Ultrium media and 71.4 TB on DLTtape. Each Model D42 frame can have up to 6 logical libraries and 6 control.

The IBM TotalStorage 3584 High Availability Frame Model HA1 may be added to the IBM TotalStorage 3584 Tape Library Base Frame Models L22, L32, or L52. In conjunction with a service bay feature on the 3584 Model D22 or D52, the Model HA1 provides for the installation and operation of a second library accessor in a 3584 Tape Library to help improve availability and performance. The 3584 Model HA1 itself provides only a frame, that serves as the Service Bay A for the original accessor that came with the 3584 Model Lxx. It does not contain any tape drives or storage cells for customer data cartridges. An additional 3584 Model D22 or D52 Frame is required as a Service Bay B for the second accessor.​​

The IBM TotalStorage 3588 Tape Drive Model F3A is designed for installation in a IBM TotalStorage 3584 Tape Library to offer high capacity, performance, and technology designed for the midrange open systems environment. This model incorporates the new Linear Tape-Open (LTO) IBM TotalStorage Ultrium 3 Tape Drive, which more than doubles maximum tape drive throughput data rate performance over the IBM LTO generation 2 Tape Drive (Ultrium 2). It has a native data transfer of up to 80 MB/sec. In addition, with the use of the IBM TotalStorage LTO Ultrium 400 GB Data Cartridge, the 3588 Tape Drive doubles the tape cartridge capacity up to 400 GB native physical capacity (800 GB with 2:1 compression), as compared to the IBM Ultrium 2 Tape Drives and cartridges. IBM Ultrium 3 Tape Drives can read and write LTO Ultrium 2 Data Cartridges and read LTO Ultrium 1 Data Cartridges. The 3588 Model F3A comes with a 2-Gbps Fibre Channel interface for connection to a wide spectrum of open system servers.

Other Ultrium 3 Tape Drive enhancements to help improve performance and reliability include the addition of a new dual stage 16 head actuator designed to provide precision head alignment, new independent tape loader and threader motors with positive pin retention, graceful dynamic breaking designed to maintain tension to help prevent stretching or breaking the tape and loose tape wraps, a larger 128 MB internal buffer, and highly integrated electronics using IBM-engineered copper technology.

The 3588 Tape Drive Model F3A can be installed in new or installed 3584 Tape Library Models L52 and D52, and also in installed 3584 Tape Library Models L32 and D32.

The WolfCreek 9360 Tape Library is a lower cost-of-entry, robotic library allowing shared data access across mainframe and midrange platforms.

High per-hour exchange. Performance starts at 90 exchanges per hour and upgrades up to 350 exchanges per hour.

Expandable capacity. Standard 500-cartridge capacity upgrades up to 1,000 cartridges with minimal disruption to ongoing production operations. Compact Cartridge Access Port (CAP) holds 20 cartridges with expansion to 50 cartridges.
